SUMMARY:September 2026 Gathering - Pressed Leaf Paper Lanterns
DESCRIPTION:Free registration is required. Registration for this event closes September 5th @ 11:30pm. Reserving a seat tells us how much paper and paste to buy\, so early sign-ups genuinely help.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNote that this gathering runs three hours instead of our usual two\, from 5 to 8 pm. Paper and paste need time to dry\, and we would rather not rush the good part. \n\n\n\nFall is about to turn on the coast. This month Moss Webster shows us how to catch some of that and light it from the inside\, building paper lanterns with leaves and fronds pressed into the paper so they read as silhouettes when the light comes on. \n\n\n\nYou can make a single lantern to set on a table with an LED tea light inside\, or make a few and hang them on a string. Moss is partial to Japanese maple and ferns\, but there is no wrong answer here. Flower petals with strong color often show through beautifully\, so bring those too if you have them. \n\n\n\nMoss will be out foraging before the gathering and bringing a stash to share. That said\, keep an eye out on your own walks this week. A leaf you picked up yourself is a better lantern than one from the pile. \n\n\n\nWhat to bring\n\n\n\n\nLeaves\, fern fronds\, flower petals\, seed heads\, anything flat with a good outline. Fresh is fine.\n\n\n\nA hair dryer\, if you have one you can carry. They speed up drying considerably and we will share them around the room.\n\n\n\nIf you want to hang your lanterns on a string\, bring your own LED string lights. Buy them ahead of time. LED only\, because paper lanterns and hot bulbs do not belong in the same sentence. Bulbs with a clear casing around them\, the round globe style\, spread the light through a lantern far better than a bare bulb does.\n\n\n\n\nWhat we provide\n\n\n\nPaper\, paste\, forms\, and all the tools. We are also supplying LED tea light candles for anyone making individual lanterns\, so you can take yours home lit. \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Moss Webster\n\n \nMoss has been a Coastal resident for about 10 years. Although his love for the local theater\, community\, and his growth as a chef through the culinary scene here has made this his home\, it’s his deep admiration and connection to the surrounding ecosystem that keeps him passionate about life. \n\n\n\n” I am blessed to have found a place in this Coastal rainforest and to have the chance to help build our Emerald Collective. There is so much to learn and share in these woods and at our shore. We plan to do that with the arts and fellowship!” \n\n \n \n \n ECC Blog Posts \n \n Instagram

SUMMARY:Free Screening: The People vs. Agent Orange
DESCRIPTION:The Agent Orange catastrophe did not end with the Vietnam War. A primary chemical of that defoliant still controls weeds today on farms and timberland\, in parks and playgrounds\, and along railbeds and roadways\, including here on the Oregon Coast. It can wreak havoc on the human genome\, causing birth deformities and deadly cancers. \n\n\n\nSierra Club Oregon is hosting a free screening of the documentary The People vs. Agent Orange on Saturday\, September 26\, 2026 at 5:00 p.m.\, in the Doerfler Family Theater at the Pacific Maritime Heritage Center on Newport’s historic Bayfront. The evening ends by 8:00 p.m. Emerald Curtain Collective volunteers are helping put it together. \n\n\n\nAbout the film\n\n\n\nThis 90-minute investigative documentary traces the history of herbicide use from the Vietnam War to present-day Oregon\, and follows two women leading a worldwide movement to hold the chemical manufacturers accountable. In France\, Tran To Nga spent seven years pressing a lawsuit against the American chemical industry for poisoning her and her children during the war. In Oregon\, Carol Van Strum spent decades gathering a trove of internal corporate documents exposing the knowing production of toxic herbicides and their use over civilian communities. \n\n\n\nIncriminating documents disappear. Activists are threatened. A helicopter technician secretly films the contamination of reservoirs. The film was directed and produced by Alan Adelson and Kate Taverna\, and it won the 2021 Jury Award at the Eugene Environmental Film Festival. You can watch the trailer here. \n\n\n\nLive Q&A with local forest defenders\n\n\n\nAfter the screening\, stay for a live panel with Carol Van Strum\, Deb Fant\, Eron King and Loren Wand. Carol is featured in the film\, and she will read from\, sell and sign copies of her book A Bitter Fog\, which tells the true stories of Oregon Coast residents fighting to protect their families from aerial chemical spraying. \n\n\n\nIf you have survived pesticide spraying\, you are warmly encouraged to come and share your experience during the community discussion. These are our neighbors’ stories\, and the room is for them. \n\n\n\nContent warning\n\n\n\nThe film deals with ecological destruction\, birth defects and serious health impacts. Viewer discretion is advised. \n\n\n\nAdmission\n\n\n\nAdmission is completely free. No ticket and no RSVP are needed\, so you can simply come. If you would like to let the organizers know you are coming\, Sierra Club Oregon has an optional registration page. \n\n\n\nGo deeper\n\n\n\n\n\nFilmmakers show how the Agent Orange catastrophe did not end with the Vietnam War\, from PBS Independent Lens\n\n\n\nKate Taverna\, Alan Adelson and Veronique Bernard in conversation\, from the Maysles Documentary Center\n\n\n\nAn interview with Carol Van Strum on KYAQ\, our local community radio station\n\n\n\nThe Poison Papers\, the document archive Carol Van Strum helped bring to light\n\n\n\nResources from the filmmakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent poster designed by Sierra Club volunteer Luna Bartleson\, who is @moon.and.stone.works on Instagram.

SUMMARY:October 2026 Gathering - Mixed Media Montage
DESCRIPTION:Registration is required and closes October 3rd @ 11:59pm. We suggest a donation of $10 or more to help cover materials\, which you can add at registration or by check made out to Coast Range Association\, our fiscal sponsor. No one is turned away. \n\n\n\n\nOctober is the season for remembering\, and this month Liz Fox shows us how to hold onto a little of it. We are making mixed media montages\, small assembled keepsakes built from old photographs\, found objects\, and bits of ephemera that mean something to you. \n\n\n\nThink of it as a little shrine you can hold in your hand. A vintage matchbox becomes a frame. A tin holds a face. A line of typewritten text names the person\, the place\, or the year. You layer photos\, paper\, and small objects\, along with whatever you carried in with you\, until the piece says what you wanted it to say. \n\n\n\nThese montages look lovely on a shelf\, a windowsill\, or a mantel\, and they make a heartfelt gift. Honor someone you want to remember\, or make one just for the pleasure of the making. \n\n\n\nWe will be at it from 5 to 8 pm. A good montage takes a little time to assemble\, so give yourself the evening and settle in. \n\n\n\nWhat to bring\n\n\n\n\nPhotos\, or copies of photos\, that you want to cut up. Copies of old family pictures work beautifully\, so print a few extras and bring more than you think you need.\n\n\n\nMemorabilia of the person you are remembering\, or small pieces that remind you of them. A ticket stub\, a pressed flower\, a scrap of a letter\, a button\, a bead\, a little keepsake.\n\n\n\nA base\, if you already have one in mind. A special frame\, a pet collar\, a small wooden box\, an old tin. Bring it and we will build around it.\n\n\n\n\nWhat we provide\n\n\n\nCollage materials\, tools\, and a selection of matchboxes\, tins\, and other small items to embellish with. We will also have a typewriter out for adding text to your piece\, so you can title it\, date it\, or set down a few words that belong with it. \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Liz Fox\n\n \nMy desire to connect and communicate drives my art and the concern I feel for our planet draws me to be part of the Emerald Curtain Collective. I enjoy sculpting masks of key species that help educate others about our unique ecosystems. \n\n\n\nI’ve lived on the Oregon coast for most of my life and navigated a sea of careers since graduating with a Soil Science degree from OSU in 1980. Retiring as a high school librarian in 2020\, I’ve been a full-time artist ever since\, diving into the riptide I’ve waded in for over 40 years. My marine biologist husband\, Dave and I have 2 amazing children\, 3 unruly dogs\, and live on a swamp between Newport and Toledo. \n\n \n \n \n ECC Blog Posts

SUMMARY:Free Screening: Free to Grow
DESCRIPTION:Emerald Curtain Collective is co-hosting a free screening of Free to Grow\, a new Pacific Northwest film about herbicide use in Oregon forests and three families fighting for health and justice. Join us on Sunday\, October 11\, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. in the Bromley Room at the Siuslaw Public Library in Florence. All ages are welcome. \n\n\n\nThis is a community event with partners\, not an ECC gathering. ECC founder Willow Kasner will host and serve as MC. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the film\n\n\n\nFree to Grow is a 30-minute documentary by Emmy-winning filmmaker Jesse Andrew Clark of Old Grove Films\, following three families fighting pesticide exposure from aerial herbicide spraying by the forestry industry. Rural Oregon families have fought aerial herbicide spraying by the forestry industry for more than 50 years\, and the film asks whether public safety around these substances has improved since. It weaves historic archival footage with modern-day stories of families dealing with herbicide exposure in their own backyards. The trailer above is a short look at it. The Forest Climate Alliance has more about the film from an earlier screening\, including how to track pesticide spraying near you. \n\n\n\nPanel discussion and Q&A\n\n\n\nAfter the film\, stay for a panel discussion and audience Q&A with people who have lived this. Members of Community Rights Lane County and Lincoln County Community Rights will be there\, along with people who have been directly affected by the sprays and people involved in initiatives to stop them. \n\n\n\nAdmission\n\n\n\nAdmission is free. There are no tickets and no RSVP\, so you can simply come. The Facebook event\, hosted by the Oregon Community Rights Network\, has more information. \n\n\n\nSponsored by Protect Lane County Watersheds\, with Lincoln County Community Rights\, Community Rights Lane County\, the Oregon Community Rights Network\, and Emerald Curtain Collective.
